Opal

Opal is a hardened jelly made up of silica and water, found filling cavities in rocks, as stalagmites or as shell or bone. It has an uneven or conchoidal fracture. The iridescence is due to the interference of white light on minute silica spheres in the sturcture of the opal. Fire opals are usually faceted, while others are carved or cut en cabochon.
